Course Descriptions

Cortana - Tom Wadnola

Cortana is your personal assistant. Cortana works best when it can learn about you and your activities by using data from your device, your personal Microsoft account, third-party services and other Microsoft services. To enable Cortana to provide personalized experiences and relevant suggestions, Microsoft collects and uses various types of data, such as your device location, data from your calendar, the apps you use, data from your emails and text messages, who you call, your contacts and who you interact with on your device. Cortana also learns about you by collecting data about how you use your device and other Microsoft services, such as your music, alarm settings, whether the lock screen is on, what you view and purchase, your browse and Bing search history, and more. You can manage what data Cortana uses, and what it knows about you in Cortana Settings and Notebook.

Digital Photography, 4 weeks - Herb Sawtell

Learn how to use your camera's many settings to take better pictures, how to transfer those pictures into a computer and then experience some of the free tools available for editing, printing and managing your pictures.

Edge - Tom Wadnola

Edge is the new browser from Microsoft that comes with Windows 10.

Etsy - Tom Wadnola

Etsy is a member forums that let's you interact with other members of the Etsy community.

Anyone who has spent more than 30 seconds on Etsy knows that it's a bang-up place to buy and sell gorgeous handmade and vintage pieces. But Etsy is more than just an amazing online marketplace; it's also a vibrant community of interesting, creative people. On Etsy, connections are made, friendships are formed, love matches are made, and lives are enriched.

Etsy is defined forum as "a public meeting place for open discussion", derived from the marketplaces and public places found in ancient Roman cities across that great empire. Similarly, Etsy's forums serve as meeting places for Etsy members. In essence, Etsy forums are public message boards where members can discuss all manner of topics, but for purpose is a public forum for selling your handmade items, that you create.

Excel Pivot Tables - Tom Wadnola

Pivot Tables are one of Excel's most powerful features. A pivot table allows you to extract the significance from a large, detailed data set.

Our data set consists of 214 rows and 6 fields.

Excel Spreadsheets - Lloyd Sellers

Become familiar with basic spreadsheet features. You'll learn how to open a spreadsheet, select a cell or range of cells, create formulas, how to add or insert a row or column, change cell alignment, create a chart based on spreadsheet data, and save/print your spreadsheet.

Facebook for Business - Tom Wadnola

The Students will follow the instructor in discussing the different methods to use Facebook to promote their business. Topics: creating pages, promoting business, and creating ad campaigns via the internet using Facebook.

Students are required to bring a flashdrive to take home copies of the class room material and should have working knowledge of Facebook or get permission from the Instructor. They can also bring their laptops and must have a Facebook User ID and Password.

Google Photos - Herb Sawtell

A free program from Google (Replacing Picasa) for editing, sharing and saving photos. The free application provides for unlimited storage of your photos on the cloud, performing some basic editing of the photos, organizing them into albums and sharing them with others. Your photos will be available from any computer with Internet access.

iCloud - Tom Wadnola

With iCloud you can Safely store all presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images and any other kind of documents in iCloud. Documents you store in iCloud drive will be kept up to date across all your devices, and you can access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC.

Here's what you can do with iCloud:

  • Store and access all your documents in one place from any of your devices
  • Keep files and folders up to date across all your devices
  • Create new files and folders from iCloud-enabled apps
  • Work on the same file across multiple apps

Intro to Computers, 5 weeks - Lloyd Sellers

Get an introduction to the Windows 7 operating system: PC hardware components, file and folder management, word processing, basic Excel spreadsheets, constructing tables in word, mail merge, & surfing the Internet. 5 week class.

Intro to Excel - Tom Wadnola

The Intro to Excel is the initial introduction for Excel 2013, it's preliminary functions and operations for setting up a worksheet.

Intro to Facebook - Tom Wadnola

Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with your family and friends online. This workshop will show you how to create your facebook account and the differences from being private and public. The student will learn all the basic commands and how to set up your Facebook account.

Prerequisite: to know how to use the copy and paste functions and the basic keyboard functions for the computer.

Intro to Picasa - Herb Sawtell

The workshop provides an overview of Picasa, formerly offered for free by Google. A free copy of this basic editing program with many valuable features will be provided.

Intro to Power Point - George Mine

Learn to view PowerPoint shows with a free Viewer from Microsoft and learn how to make a PowerPoint show.

iPad - John Dowley

Using a hands-on approach, students will learn iPad buttons, switches, screen gestures and navigation techniques. It will cover general settings, the on-board keyboard, downloading applications, installing updates, using the calendar/Contacts and managing storage. This course is intended for all persons interested in developing basic skills in the use of the Apple iPad.

Students should bring their own iPad.

iPhone - John Dowley

This hands on workshop will cover iPhone settings, using Siri to make calls, eMail, Calendar, Contacts and the Camera. There will be additional time for Q&A.

Students should bring their own iPhone.

Mail Merge - Lloyd Sellers

Learn to make mailing labels, envelopes, name tags and create a letterhead form.

Mini Photo Safari - Herb Sawtell

Go on location with Herb to learn how to get that picture that has been eluding you.

Manage, email, and enhance photos with free PICASA 3.6 program.

Ransomware - Tom Wadnola

What is Ransomeware? Ransomware is a sophisticated piece of malware that blocks a victim's access to his/her files, and the only way to regain access to the files is to pay a ransom.

A quick history of Ransomeware - It may be difficult to imagine, but the first Ransomware emerged in 1989. It was called the AIDS Trojan, whose modus operandi seems crude nowadays. It spread via floppy disks and involved sending $189 to a post office box in Panama to pay the ransom.

Top targets for Ransomware creators and distributors - Cybercriminals soon realized that companies and organizations were far more profitable than users so they went after the bigger targets such as police departments, city councils, businesses, schools, personal computers and hospitals.

This class will introduce and educate to what is "Ransomware",how to recognize it and how to protect your computer.

Saving and Organizing Your Files - Herb Sawtell

Use Windows explorer to move files (pictures, music, documents, video, etc) between your camera, flash drive, memory card and computer. Learn how to organize your files in folders and save them securely. Learn how to name folders and rename individual files in folders replacing the original assigned name like the camera's digital name.

Setting up & using Gmail - Herb Sawtell

Set up a Gmail account in class and become familiar with the many powerful tools available for managing, organizing and saving your mail.

Tables, Clip Art - Lloyd Sellers

Learn how to construct a table in a word document, define column headings and row labels. How to add a column of numbers and sort a column alphabetically or numerically in ascending or descending order. Show/hide gridlines and borders. Add clip art to a word document and resize or move/copy clip art within a document.

Task Manager - Tom Wadnola

Windows 10's Task Manager is both simpler and much more powerful than the versions in Windows XP and 7. Average users will find it easier to perform the most common task—killing applications that are no longer responding—and power users will find that it puts more advanced features right at your fingertips.

Understand Digital Camera - Herb Sawtell

Windows 10 Basic Skills - Tony Fiore

This is a full day workshop. Students must bring their own laptop and must know how to turn it on with the password. This workshop will show the first time computer student the basic components of the computer, an introduction of how to use them, and show the student the basic screens needed to operate the system. Students will be shown what to do, what buttons to push or to click on with a mouse. Each student will receive a flash drive configured with the information needed for the “First Time User” and will be a permanent Windows 10 reference to take home.

This workshop is a requirement (prerequisite) for Windows 1, 2, 3 & 4 unless otherwise pre-approved by the instructor.

A clean computer makes your computer run much faster and longer and reduces the number of computer problems.

Windows 10 Photo Editor

The Windows 10 operating system contains a photo editor with many useful tools for editing, sharing and viewing your photos. It also provides access to the photo’s meta data. This workshop will address each of these.

Windows 10 Photo Manager - Tom Wadnola

Windows 10 has a new Photos app that does more than just display your pictures as a slideshow. This new default app organizes your pictures by date taken (and even creates curated albums for you), features a few nice editing tools for image enhancement, and lets you share pictures via social networks and email. While it's not going to replace Photoshop any time soon, the Photos app is worth a look.
